Health Focus: Adrenal Burnout
Are you feeling irritable, exhausted or having trouble
sleeping? You may be suffering from adrenal burnout.
Read here for more...
Chronic stress causes the adrenal glands to release wave after
wave of hormones (adrenocorticotropic hormone, or ACTH) that
prep the body for do-or-die situations. Eventually these hormone
reserves run low—or come up empty. Adrenaline increases blood
pressure, straining the heart, and raises blood sugar, increasing
metabolic rate. Achy joints, anxiety, blood sugar problems, brain
fog, early-morning fatigue, afternoon exhaustion, low sex drive,
insomnia, memory loss, and slow recovery from illness are some of
the signs that your adrenal glands are in overdrive. If you are
feeling stressed out and experiencing these symptoms, your body is
signaling that you need to slow down, rest and recharge, especially
your adrenal glands.
Suzy Cohen, RPh, suggests eating a healthy whole foods diet and
making mealtime as relaxed as possible. Avoid stimulants like
caffeine and colas. You also want to replenish antioxidants A, C, E,
selenium and zinc. Vitamin C is important, as well, in supporting
healthy adrenals. It is recommended that you take 1 to 2 grams, in
divided doses, every day you are feeling stressed. The B vitamin
choline has also been shown to be helpful in lessening anxiety, in
one study. Dr. Elson M. Haas, MD recommends taking more than
the RDA for all the easily depleted B vitamins in two divided doses
during the day—but not in the evening as they may prevent sleep.
The HBC staff at Integral Yoga Natural Foods recommends New
Chapter Stress Support Multi and IYNF brand Hi-Potency B Vitamins.
Adaptogens, medicinal plants that enhance our resistance to stress
while increasing concentration and endurance, are the most
effective botanicals for supporting the adrenals, balancing
neurotransmitters, relieving anxiety and easing you into a restful
sleep. David Winston, RH (AHG) recommends American ginseng,
ashwagandha, Asian ginseng, cordyceps, dang shen, eleuthero,
holy basil, jiaogulan, licorice, reishi, rhaponticum, rhodiola, and
shisandra. Christopher Hobbs, LAc, and Kathi Keville add that
“chronic stress and anxiety almost always affect the digestive
system,” and recommend taking bitters before meals. Look for a
formula containing gentian, ginger, angelica, cardamom, artichoke
leaf, and orange peel. Two specific products that you will find at
IYNF are New Chapter Stress Take Care and Megafood Adrenal
Strength.
Traditional Chinese medicine seeks to rebalance the body by
supporting digestion and the liver as well as the adrenals, making
detoxification useful after intense stress. Other effective, holistic
approaches include acupuncture and relaxation techniques.
Integral Yoga also offers two homeopathic remedies that you may
find beneficial: Boiron Sedalia for Stress and Stressmints. As well
as Rescue Remedy, a Bach flower remedy.
To learn more about specific products that you may take to support
your adrenal glands come in to IYNF and speak with one of our
